Tyrrell Racing Organisation

Ken Tyrrel had been a good driver in the 500cc F3 and started to manage FJ, F3 and F2 teams as from 1960. His drivers were John Surtees, Jacky Ickx and Jackie Stewart.

The ambitious Ken took the Tyrrell Racing Organization into F1 with the Cosworth DFV engine ordered in 1968 before they had a car and no finance. The car came for free from Matra. In 1968/69 the Tyrrell Matras obtained nine victories with Stewart at the wheel.

Then Matra refused to build a new car to be powered by Ford engines and Ken turned to March to eventually produce the Tyrrell 001 for the ELF team designed by Derek Gardner. Ken Tyrrell is now the nestor of constructors after Ferrari died. Ken became chairman of the company with his son Bob as director, Postlethwaite as engineering director and Migeot in charge of R&D. Early 1990 Tyrrell associated with TAG/McLaren Marketing services. The team was bought by British American Tobacco in 1997 and completed its final season as Tyrrell in 1998, before forming the basis for the new B.A.R. team in 1999.
