Practice: Changes to the circuit: the road from the Portier corner was widened, the tunnel had become longer, the chicane on the quay was installed in the pre-1972 place, the harbour front road now bends before the tabac and curves around the swimming pool and adds another curve before the gasworks corner, adding 135 metres to the circuit and thus reducing the laps from 80 to 78. The previous road from the tabac to the gasworks corner has become a walking area and now caters for the pits area, with entrance from the Rascasse corner and exit just after the starting line. All the drivers had to discover the new circuit again.

Race Cevert had a fantastic start from the second row flipping past Stewart and leading in the Ste-Devote, Fittipaldi took the opportunity to follow Stewart. The Lotus definitely had some problems because it kept on falling back. Cevert had to hand over his lead to Peterson after he hit a curb. Then in lap 8 Peterson had fuel problems and Stewart took over.
The race settled with Stewart in the lead followed by E.Fittipaldi, Lauda, Ickx, W.Fittipaldi, Peterson, Ganley, Hulme, Hailwood, Pace and Jarier.
Lauda had to retire in lap 25 minus a gearbox. Stewart pressed on by the Lotus of E.Fittipaldi and dug a hole.
In lap 40 Beltoise crushed the BRM on the guard rail exiting Casino square, then Ickx and Ganley abandoned with broken drive shafts.
The order of cars was now Stewart, E.Fittipaldi, W.Fittipaldi, Hulme and Cevert who was still slipstreaming behind Stewart, although a lap behind.

The last laps saw Emmerson Fittipaldi giving an utmost try to catch Stewart and even breaking the lap record in the before last lap.. Cevert gave Fittipaldi the free way, but nobody could stop Stewart from getting this Monaco victory.
