THE MONACO GRAND PRIX LIBRARY BY ROY HULSBERGEN

19th GrandPrix - 1961

14th May- 100 laps of 3.145 km - 314.5 km

Practice: New formula 1.5 Litres, max weight 450 kg, this was to slow everyone down and achieve better safety. Monaco again is the first race of the season. Each factory was guaranteed two starting places and previous winners also had a starting place. The remaining four places had to be fought for. The pits is put back from the Quai des Etats Unis to the Quai Albert Ier. First installation of guard rail after having tested this with the Rally of Monte-Carlo. An overwhelming entry of cars with the Coventry-Climax engine. The sudden change of formula did not give enough time for the teams to develop their cars. Besides Ferrari, most cars were modified Formula 2 cars. Ferrari was sure to win this GP, but a certain Stirling Moss had other ideas. Jim Clark had an accident in the Ste-Devote and was relegated to spectator for the remainder of the practice. Brabham did his contractual four laps and then rushed off to Nice Airport to qualify in Indianapolis and be back for the Sunday start in Monaco!

Stirling Moss flagged by Louis Chiron

Race
After a faultless starting flag of Louis Chiron, Richie Ginter is first off in the new Ferrari, Clark and Moss following 5 seconds behind. Clark's engine gave up very soon and finally Moss started to chase Ginther accompanied by Bonnier in the brand new Porsche 787.

Further back a seven car battle was taking place between Gurney, Brooks, McLaren, the two non related Hill’s, von Trips and Surtees. Jack Brabham chose not to join in.

End of lap 12: Ginther leading with Moss close behind, Bonnier had fallen back and Graham Hill was pushing his car with fuel problems to the pits. Two laps later both Moss and Bonnier shoved past the Ferrari, the group of seven had sorted out their duel.

Lap 25: Brabham was blowing heavy fumes, the car looked as tired as the driver. The three Ferraris were now together led by Phil Hill and right up to Bonnier. Halfway the race Moss was leading by 6 seconds, followed by Ginther, P.Hill, von Trips, while Bonnier had fallen back.
Moss managed to keep the advantage by lapping the tail enders with his skilled driving, although the chasing Ferraris had 25 hp more under the bonnet. When Ginther finally overtakes Hill, the gap gets even smaller to 3 seconds. But Moss was not to be (over)taken, faultlessly he took the flag setting a new race record.
